Questions we’re asked about the
Faith, Hope & Cancer Support Group
How often does the group meet?
The group meets once a month on the first Tuesday of the month from 7 to 8 p.m.
Who runs the group?
The conversation is facilitated by two individuals who have experienced cancer and have been leading the group for many years. One of them is a retired nurse and the other is a retired special education teacher.
How long has the group met?
The Faith, Hope & Cancer Support Group was established in May 2001.
I don’t want to come by myself. Can I bring someone with me?
Yes. You’re welcome to bring family members and friends who are supporting you.
Is there a cost?
No. There is no cost. You will not be asked for a donation. We are people helping people through difficult times that we have also experienced.
What cancers are included?
The group is open to everyone with a cancer diagnosis, no matter the type of cancer.
What’s the format of the meetings?
They are informal discussions in which members of the group suggest and explore topics that are of concern to them. On occasion the group may invite in a knowledgeable person on some aspect of cancer and its treatment as a guest speaker.
Will my privacy be respected?
Attendees are expected to respect the privacy of group members and not discuss the treatment or other details of other attendees’ care outside the group.
Will I be expected to attend your church?
No. The facilitators are compassionate and active members of Arise United Methodist Church, and you are most welcome to join us for Sunday worship, but there is no expectation or requirement that you do.
Why do people other than those with cancer attend?
Friends and family members share the worries of their loved ones. The group can assist them with their concerns and provide insight into how they can better support the individual with cancer.
It is not easy for me to get around. How difficult is it to get to your meeting room?
There is parking right outside the doors to the meeting room as well as handicapped parking immediately in front of the main entrance of the church building. The church is all on one floor, and there are no steps. The building itself, restrooms and classrooms are easily accessible to wheelchairs and walkers.
Do I have to register or commit for a certain amount of time?
No. You’re welcome to drop in and be a part of the group for as long as is helpful to you. We’re here for you as long as you need us to be.
I need to know more and would like to speak to someone before coming. How do I do that?
Please call the church at 734-878- 1928 or email assistant@arisechurch.org. One of the group facilitators will get in touch with you.
