Arise New Visitors

Hello, and welcome to the Arise Church website! I'm Pastor Reed Swanson and I'm glad you are interested in learning more about us here at Arise. I believe you'll find Arise is a friendly church, and there are many ways for newcomers to get involved. Please see the Small Groups section of this site for some good ways to connect with others. Below are some topics that may answer common questions if you aren't familiar with our church or our property. We hope that everyone who visits Arise Church will feel the love of God expressed through the people, music, ministries, and messages of our church family. We look forward to meeting you sometime soon.

Rev. Reed Swanson

Rev. Reed Swanson Pastorpastorreed@arisechurch.org

I was born and raised in Clarkston, Michigan. I graduated from Methodist College in NC with a BA in Public Administration and Economics in 1988, and got my Master of Divinity from Duke in 1995 where my passion and focus was Biblical study of Paul's letters and Christian Ethics.

Before entering ordained ministry, I worked for three years as a movie theater manager, spent three years in the US Army JAG Corps, and ten years in youth and camping ministry (where I met my wife Juliana in 1989).

I am a huge sports fan. I am currently an assistant track coach at Pinckney High School. I have been a runner since 1972 and have run 24 marathons including 2 NYC Marathons and 3 Boston Marathons. I have also run several triathlons. In short, I just love sports of any kind.

I am an avid reader, both fiction and nonfiction. I love music of all kinds. I like to sing in quartets, trios, duets and small groups (I don't consider myself much of a soloist). I am learning to play guitar and piano, am trying to remember how to play the trumpet, and I occasionally play the harmonica on ski lifts and long canoe trips.

I've been married to my wife Juliana since April 25, 1992. I have three children, Will (22) serving in the US Army, Grace (20) junior at Calvin College, and Joy (15) freshman in high school.

I was born and raised in Lansing, MI. I joined the US Army in 1979 where I served in the medical corp. for 3 years. I graduated from Southwest Texas State University (now known as Texas State University) while in the military, with a BA in Teaching and an emphasis on Psychology; and then received a BA in Accounting in 2006.

I have spent the last 30 plus years as an entrepreneur, in the hospital medical equipment business. My current medical company, Jefferson Diversified Group, has been in existence since 1999.

I was given the opportunity to work for Arise Church in 2012. It was, and still is, a labor of love. I am now semi-retired from the medical corporation, giving me plenty of time to do my favorite things: Serve God, love my wife, fawn over my 7 grandchildren-the joys of my life, and fish.

I am heavily involved with many aspects of the church including: administrative, life groups, and music. Also, I am one of two certified Methodist Lay Servants at Arise, a designation by the UMC for the interpretation of scriptures, doctrine, organization, and ministries of the church.

I live with my wife, Tina. We have two children, Steve and Angela; two in-law children, Sarah and Eddie; 7 grandchildren, Annabelle, Grace, Logan, Madelyn, Finley, Lyra, and Juliet; a dog named Summer and big cat named Sophie. I am truly a blessed man!

VISITOR FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT TIME ARE CHURCH SERVICES?

Combined Traditional Worship &
Contemporary Praise Service 10:00 am

Sunday School 10 am

ABOUT OUR WORSHIP SERVICE

Arise's worship services are warm and friendly with a relaxed atmosphere. We sing a mixture of hymns and contemporary songs led by our pianist and praise band. A liturgist leads the Call to Worship, Unison Prayer, the Lord's Prayer, and recites the church's creeds. We read a few scriptures after a dedicated prayer time and conclude with a sermon. The sermon averages about 16 to 18 minutes, and the full service closes within an hour.

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?

Casual attire is commonly worn at Arise, but some people choose to dress more formally. Both are appropriate at either service.

AM I EXPECTED TO GIVE MONEY TO THE CHURCH?

There is an offering at each service for our regular attendees and members. As a guest, we do not expect you to donate money.

WHAT ABOUT TAKING COMMUNION?

Arise is a United Methodist Church and all people are welcome to Christ's table in our denomination. You do not need to be a member of this church or any church. People of all ages are welcome. Communion is offered at the front of the church or can be brought to your seat. We generally celebrate Communion on the first Sunday of the month at both services.

WHAT ABOUT A NURSERY OR SUNDAY SCHOOL FOR KIDS?

There is a nursery for infants and children under three during the 10 a.m. service. Children ages 4 - 12 attend worship with their families at 10 a.m. They are dismissed for their Sunday School classes, usually after a Children's Message in the early part of the service.

DO YOU HAVE PARKING CLOSE BY?

There is plenty of paved surface parking at Arise, and handicap parking is available right in front of the door. We are situated on 20 rural acres, so enjoy the short, scenic drive along our pond and Reflection Garden as you approach the church building itself.

IS THE FACILITY ACCESSIBLE?

Arise Church is ACA compliant and is handicap accessible.

WHAT ABOUT CONNECTING WITH OTHER PEOPLE?

We hope all visitors of Arise Church feel welcomed. Enjoy refreshments and snacks during our meet and greet every Sunday, beginning at 9:30 a.m. Visit our 'Welcome Table' to receive a small gift for first-time guests and information about Arise’s activities. There are many other ways to connect with people and activities at Arise. Pastor Reed is happy to discuss this with you if you are interested in learning more.
